Can I Travel with an eVisa?
If you’ve received a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), you might have noticed that it expires on December 31, 2024. This expiration has understandably caused concern, especially for those whose UK stay extends beyond this date.
Since BRPs will no longer be valid after December 31, 2024, it’s crucial to apply for an eVisa to replace your BRP before the deadline. We’re here to help you smoothly navigate this transition and answer any questions you may have.
How the eVisa System Works
The eVisa links your passport or travel document to an online system that tracks your immigration status, expiration dates, and any conditions, such as work rights or access to public funds. Keep your passport or ID card details up to date in your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to ensure your status is easily verified.
You can also share your eVisa status with third parties, like employers or landlords, by generating a share code via the ‘View and Prove’ service. This code provides temporary access to your immigration information and can be regenerated as needed.
Steps to Transition to an eVisa
1. Create a UKVI Account
Start by setting up your free UKVI account. Be cautious of scams that ask for payment or personal details. You’ll need:
- A smartphone
- A mobile number
- An email address
- Your BRP card or a valid passport (if you already have a visa)
- Your visa application number (Global Web Form (GWF) or Unique Application Number (UAN))
Make sure to update your UKVI account if any of the following occur:
- You renew or replace your identity document (e.g., passport expiration)
- You change your name (e.g., marriage)
- Your address, phone number, or email changes
- You update or add an identity document
Once registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email with important instructions for accessing your account.
2. Confirm Your Identity Using the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ App
After setting up your UKVI account, sign in and download the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app from the App Store or Google Play. Ensure it’s the correct app by checking its name.
Link the app to your UKVI account by scanning the QR code or entering a connection code. Follow the steps to:
- Take clear photos of your BRP (front and back)
- Scan the biometric chip inside the card
- Complete a biometric face scan
- Take a photo for your eVisa (ensure it’s clear, against a plain background, and free from shadows)
This photo will appear on your eVisa, so make sure it’s one you’re happy with.
3. Link Your eVisa to Your UKVI Account
After confirming your identity, complete the ‘Contact Preferences’ section and set up security questions for future verification. After signing the digital declaration, submit your registration.
Once processed, you’ll receive an email indicating your eVisa registration has been submitted. It may take a few days for your eVisa to appear in your account. Check your inbox (and spam folder) regularly.
When your eVisa is ready, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to verify and view your immigration status. Review your eVisa carefully to ensure all details are accurate.
4. Handling Dependents
If you have dependents in the UK, each will need their own UKVI account and eVisa. Repeat the same steps for every family member.
Traveling with Your eVisa
Your eVisa is linked to the travel ID document (e.g., BRP or passport) used during your UKVI account setup. Ensure this document is up-to-date and linked to your eVisa for smooth travel to and from the UK.
Before your BRP expires on December 31, 2024, update your UKVI account with your current passport details and link your eVisa to it. This will ensure your passport is your primary travel document.
Failure to update your UKVI account may result in delays at the UK border or difficulties proving your immigration status.
